    FAQs on 1:1 Professional Coaching

    What is coaching?

Coaching works as a partnership between coach and client; it helps to clarify goals, to make them challenging and motivating, then to achieve those goals with the energy that comes from their deepest values.

Coaching is not telling people what to do. It is helping them evaluate what they are doing now in their life in the light of their goals, dreams, values and intentions. It gives them new choices and leads to change. Coaching helps a person go beyond the mental blocks of what they thought was possible. Everyone wants to know how they can be better, how they can improve and be the best they can be. Coaching is the answer.

    What happens before a session?

The coach will typically suggest a discovery call first to get to know the client. Upon confirmation of coaching service, the coach will send some of the documents including a coach-client agreement, invoice and a dedicated folder for any necessary sharing of information and notes.

    What happens during a session?

Often, after an initial assessment/discovery call, sessions can be conducted face-to-face or remotely, usually via video calls (like Zoom or Google Meet) and occasionally through instant messaging.

During the session, your coach will ask you some questions, such as what you want to achieve in life, what areas you’re unhappy with and where you’d like to see yourself in the future. Although a coach will work with you, it’s often up to you to challenge or reflect upon certain ideas you have to help you move forward with your life. You will never be forced to make any decisions you don’t feel comfortable with and all sessions will be confidential as per the client-coach agreement, allowing you to explore your thoughts and feelings privately in a safe space.

Coaching is often seen as a partnership between you and your coach, who will gently encourage you to explore how to make positive changes in your life based on your aspirations. A coach should also offer support and feedback to help you to stay focused on your goals and will occasionally set you tasks and objectives to work on outside of sessions.

How long is a coaching session?

A coaching session typically runs anywhere between 60 to 90 minutes depending on the client’s and coach’s schedule.

How many types of coaching are there?

There are many coaching styles used to address different situations and to direct a coaching session. Depending on the client’s goals and how they wish to achieve these, a coach will assess each individual and determine a coaching style from there.

To give you an idea of the types of coaching that we do:

    Business coaching

Business coaches coach people in their work on professional issues. They often work with managers inside a company and may also coach teams.

    Team Coaching

Many coaches specialise in coaching business teams. These coaches help teams to give their best, helping them to work smoothly and effectively.

    Life coaching

A life coach deals with the client’s life in all its dimensions — personal and professional, health and relationships. Often life coaches will help a client in their work, because work is an important part of life, but their focus is not wholly on work. A life coach is the only professional trained to deal with all aspects of a client’s life.

    Career coaching

A career coach specialises in coaching people who want to find a job, change career, or get back into the job market after a break from work.

What's the difference between coaching and counselling?

The main difference between counselling and coaching is that counselling can investigate the underlying causes of mental health problems. Coaches are not (unless specified) qualified to diagnose or treat any health-related problems, although if the situation arises they may suggest you see a GP.

How many coaching sessions do I need?

This depends entirely on the client. One can have as many or as few coaching sessions as preferred. This is because many coaches operate over the phone or via video calls, the sessions can easily fit around your schedule. Some people hire a coach once every few months, some people have a session once a week.

What can a coach help me with?

Through questions and exercises, they will try to get an idea of how you perceive the world. From this, they will be able to identify the most effective route to your goal. Some people feel intimidated by the idea of change and so need to take things slowly to fulfil their goals. In this situation, a coach might divide goals into smaller bite-sized pieces. Other people may get impatient and lose interest. In this situation, a coach might suggest introducing stronger reminders and incentives to keep them on track.

However you approach life, your coach will be able to tailor your sessions to fit. Subjects coaches deal with include:

Relationships – Do you wish you had the confidence to approach someone you like romantically? Do you struggle with commitment? Are you struggling to cope with a divorce? A coach could help you to understand your love-life and work towards improving it.

Business life – Starting and running a business is tough work. Sometimes we get so absorbed in hard work we neglect ourselves. Coaches can help build confidence, develop leadership skills, enhance decision-making abilities and assess your work/life balance.

Personal life – Do you feel like you’re not making the most of life? There’s so much to see, do and learn in this world, but often a lack of confidence, time and willpower can cause us to stay inside our comfort zones, doing nothing. Life coaches use specialist skills to motivate their clients to do the things they want to do, see and achieve, so they can finally fight the urge to procrastinate.

Performance – Improvement is at the heart of life coaching. Whatever your skill, coaching could help improve it. Whether you’re an athlete, an artist, a writer, a performer, or a musician adopting specialist techniques will help you to push your limitations and exceed expectations.

    How much does coaching cost?

One coaching session usually starts at RM500. There are other price packages for four sessions and above. For certain clients, there is also a special rate upon further discussion with the coach. For more information on the special rates, contact info@illuminairre.com to speak with our coaching assistant.

Will Illuminairre be collecting my personal information?

I am most grateful to Darshana and Michelle for their guidance and business coaching sessions! Through them, I understood how important it is to communicate my brand. They helped me to identify, reflect and create appropriate strategies to market my brand. I particularly appreciate their professionalism and candid feedback of what works and what doesn’t in my 1:1 coaching sessions. What makes them good at what they do is that they tell you what you need to hear, not what you want to hear.

Whether yours is a fledgling business or a fully functioning SME, I would highly recommend Illuminaire as they teach you how to communicate your brand effectively.
